Pavee Lackeen: The Traveller Girl - BBC2 tonight

Just noticed that BBC2 are showing the film Pavee Lackeen: The Traveller Girl tonight at 12:20 (technically tomorrow). This Irish film was the subject of my third ever post on Alan in Belfast.

If you’re not feeling sleepy, or you’d prefer to set your video recorder(or PVRs), it’s well worth a viewing to watch the teenage Winnie and the rest of the Maughan family living in their caravan near Dublin docks.

“You witness Winnie’s desire for education frustrated ... Every bureaucrat that comes to the caravan is a disappointment ... it’s a startlingly real film, showing squalor, prejudice and oppression in a non-sentimental way. But the images are compelling, and the challenge uncompromising.”

It’s also a film that opens our eyes to other people with whom we share this island. And it questions prejudice in the face of discrimination and injustice.

Let me know what you make of it.
